Xian Xinghai was one of the greatest composers of classical and traditional music. He was
born in 1905. He is famous for the song The Yellow River Cantata ( 《黄河大合唱》 ), which was
written in 1939 in only six days. He used traditional Chinese music to introduce China to the rest
of the world. He brought Western and Chinese music together. But he died young in 1945 when he
was only 40 years old. He is called “the People’s Musician”, and his songs have been popular for
more than 60 years.
Nie Er was a Chinese composer. He is known for composing the national anthem of the
People’s Republic of China, March of the Volunteers ( 《义勇军进行曲》 ). And he opened up a
road of China’s new music. Nie Er was fond of music since his childhood. In his spare time, he
learned to play traditional instruments such as the dizi , erhu , sanxian , and yueqin . He also learned
to play the violin when he was in college. Unfortunately, on July17, 1935, he drowned while
swimming in Fujisawa, Japan, at the age of 23.
Ma Sicong was a Chinese violinist and composer. People call him “the King of Violinists”.
His Nastalgia ( 《思乡曲》 ) composed in 1937 as part of the Inner Mongolia Suite ( 《内蒙组
曲》 ) was considered as one of the most favorite pieces of the 20th century in China. Ma died in
Philadelphia, the USA, on May 20, 1987.
