Being a kid may look fun, but sometimes it's not. I think it's not easy to be a kid. That's all because I

must do what my parents tell me to do. When I was playing outside with my friends, my mother would say,

"Peter, it's time to come home now. It's getting dark." When I grow up, no one can tell me what to do or

when to do it.

As a kid, I have to get up very early in the morning and go to school. I have so many lessons and so

much homework. When I grow up, I don't have to go to school and I never have homework.

There are so many things that I mustn't do. Last Saturday, there was a scary movie on TV. It looked

really exciting. But my mother didn't let me watch. She said, "You are too young to watch this movie,

Peter." When I grow up, I can watch anything I want.

As I am a kid, I can't go anywhere by myself. Last Friday, I wanted to buy a birthday gift for my

friend John. But I had to wait for my mom to come back home. When I want to go outside, I have to ask

my mom for a ride. When I grow up, I can drive a car to go anywhere.

But I know that my father and my mother love me very much. They always say that I am the apple of

their eyes. That's really great. So I guess I like being a kid, even though it's not easy being a kid.

31 When Peter was playing outside, Mom asked him ________.

A to go home B to watch a scary movie C to do homework D to go to school

32. From Paragraph 2, we can learn that ________.

In modern society there is a lot of disagreement about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is

good for social progress. Others say that competition is bad. It sets one person against another. And it leads to

unfriendly relationship between people.

I have taught many children who believe that their self-worth depended on how well they did at tennis and

other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and death matters. In their single-minded dream of

success, the development of many other human qualities (品质) is sadly forgotten.

However, while some seem to be lost in the desire (渴望) to succeed, others take a different attitude. In a

culture which values only the winners, they are strongly against competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters

who are under competitive pressures (压力) from their parents or society. They are always told to be the top ones,

but they think it's really hard. When I teach these young people, I often find them in a desire to fail. They seem to

search for failure (失败) by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse:" I

may have lost, but it doesn't matter because I really didn't try. If I had tried and lost, that would mean a lot."

Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on

the mistaken belief. They think one's self-respect depends on how well one does compared with others. Both are

afraid of not being valued. Only as this fear begins to dissolve (消除) can we discover a new meaning in

competition,

1 Why do some people welcome competition according to the passag?

A.It pushes society forward.

B.It improves one's abilities.

C.It develops human qualities.

D.It builds up friendly relationship.

2 The underlined phrase "the most vocal" in Paragraph 3 means .

A.those who try their best to win

B.those who value competition most highly

C.those who depend on others most for success

D.those who are against competition most strongly

3 Which of the following may the writer agree to?

A.Every effort should be paid back.

B.Competition should be encouraged.

C.Winning should be a life-and-death matter.

D.Fear of failure should be taken away in competition.

4 What does this passage mainly talk about?

A.Competition helps to set up self-respect.

B.Competition is bad for social development.

C.Ideas about competition are different among people.

D.Failures are necessary experiences in competition.

countries like Canada, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and the United States became the most important in paper-

making. Today Finland makes the best paper in the world. And it has the biggest paper industry in the world.

Many animals are in danger of dying out. We can see the number of animal species decreases faster and faster

and this trend will continue. From 1980 to 2010, at least I million animal species disappeared. Worse still, more and

more wild animals are in great danger. It is not a piece of terrible news; it is a fact, a harsh reality. Unfortunately,

we may not see these animals in the near future.

Why is the number of animal species declining year by year? Apparently animals have become victims of

fashion industry. Animal skin has been used to make fashionable clothes and these clothes are sold at a high price.

So some greedy people begin to kill animals in a large quantity. This irresponsible behaviour not only breaks the

balance of nature but also endangers the living environment of human beings.

As far as I am concerned, something must be done to stop this illegal action. We believe "no buying, no

killing". First, we must make concerning laws to protect these animals in danger. Second, we must take some

measures to protect animals effectively. Animals are our friends and part of our environment. Third, we should

raise people's awareness to protect animals and our environment. In this way, we can build a harmonious society

and ensure a sustainable development.

1 From the first paragraph, we Can learn that

A.the number of animal species decreases faster and faster

B.the number of animal species increases faster and faster

C.the number of animal species increases more and more

D.the number of animals increases more and more.

2 When did at least 1 million animal species disappear?

A.From 1908 to 2010.

B.From 1980 to 2011.

C.From 1980 to 2010.

D.From 1981 to 2010.

3 Where did animal skin go?

A.The museums. B. Home.

C.The fashion clothes factories. D. The libraries.

4 Which of the following is NOT true according to Paragraph 3?

Did you remember some unforgettable things that happened around you? Have you ever seen a fire?

What will you do if there is a fire? Will you shout for help? Or will you just stay there but do nothing?

Many people are too afraid to do something when there is a fire. But in fact, this is wrong.

Last Sunday evening my parents went out for a walk with my sister. But I studied alone at home because

I would have an English test. Suddenly, I saw bright light in my neighbor’s kitchen. I thought he was

cooking so I went on studying.

Soon, there was a terrible smell in the air and I thought something was wrong. I went out and saw fire

coming out of my neighbor’s kitchen. So I shouted “Fire! Fire!” But no one heard or came out.

I ran quickly into my house to call 119, and then I rang my neighbor’s doorbell, knocked at the door,

but there was no response. I got into the house through the window and found my neighbor sleeping in his

bedroom. I woke him up and we rushed out of the house together.

We tried our best to pour water through the kitchen window, but the fire was too heavy. Luckily, the

firemen came and put out the fire quickly. When my parents came back, they found I was dirty and tired.

After my neighbor told them the whole story, they were happy and said I was a brave boy.
